Staying up late writing a script can be stressful work. Directing and producing can be stressful work, with long and irregular hours and pay, the need to adhere to budgets and union rules, and hoping the film that was just shot actually makes money. Chefs have stressful work too, from baking bread in the early hours to concocting late-night edibles .
And then of course there are the antics of stunt actors, and the need for healing of athletes and the chronically ill.
Massage therapists can use their skills of touch and knowledge of the body to reduce stress, provide pain relief, help rehabilitation, and promote health.
As a massage therapist, you can specialize in more than 80 different types of massage, called modalities. These include swedish massage, deep-tissue massage, reflexology, acupressure, sports massage, and neuromuscular massage.
Most massage therapists work part-time or are self-employed. To develop a regular clientele, massage therapists need to not only establish a rapport with their clients, but understand their specific needs. Different muscle ailments and illnesses require different types of therapy.
However, many therapists who work 15 to 30 hours per week consider themselves to be full-time workers because when time for travel, equipment set-up, and business functions like billing are included, the hours per week can add up to more than 40.
For those massage therapists who aren't self-employed, work environments and salaries can differ depending on the industry. Massage therapists can find work in resorts, chiropractic offices, physical therapy offices, day spas, hospitals, or salons.
A variety of healthcare schools offer programs in massage therapy. These programs generally cover subjects such as anatomy; physiology, the study of organs and tissues; kinesiology, the study of motion and body mechanics; business management; ethics; and the hands-on practice of massage techniques. Training programs may concentrate on certain modalities of massage.
After graduation, you will have to obtain a license or certificate from the state of California. Certification from the California Massage Therapy Council (CAMTC) requires that you have at least 500 hours of formal training in massage therapy.
